 "We Believe We Can Achieve"

2nd and 3rd Grades get a visit from the K-9 Unit
K-9 Visit    Friday, January 16 Investigator Clint Williams from the Texas State Fire Marshall's Office in Springtown visited with the second and third graders at Joy James Elementary. Investigator Williams is a graduate of Castleberry High School and an ADC Canine Handler. He trains with a German Shepherd named Rex.
The second and third graders were reading fiction and nonfiction selections about K-9 teams. Investigator Williams demonstrated what a working dog does when he is "on duty". He set up a scent on a rock and then instructed the dog to find it. The K-9 has a stronger sense of smell and will go to the odor while an Investigator may only look at burn patterns at the fire scene. For their work, Rex was rewarded with a toy. The bond between handler and canine is strong. The canines are trained for several months before meeting the handler.
The team is certified by the SFMO trainer, who is a certified Canine Instructor, through the U.S. Border Patrol. The team re-certifies each year through the State and the North American Police Working Dog Association.

Joy James Elementary Recognizes Dr. Bob Mullen

Dr. Bob Mullen and hornJoy James Elementary students held an assembly on January 5th to recognize Dr. Bob Mullen for his leadership and service to our school district as President of the Castleberry ISD Board of Directors. Dr. Mullen was joined by his wife, Terri Mullen who teaches at Castleberry High School, and his daughter Debra Mullen, a kinesiology student at the University of North Texas. Students presented Dr. Mullen with a book of photographs and notes of appreciation. Dr. Mullen spoke to the students about his educational journey, his careers, and his musical experiences. He played a short song on his trombone, one of several brass instruments that hi plays with the River Oaks Low Brass Ensemble. Dr. Mullen spoke of the importance of education but told the students that it is equally important to learn how to get along with different people and to respect authority. He also encouraged the students to explore the fine arts, such as band, choir, or visual arts, which add interest and creativity to our lives. Above all, Dr. Mullen told the students that learning is a life-long process, one that he has clearly modeled in his roles as minister, counselor, chaplain, music instructor, parent, and school board member. Joy James Elementary appreciates you, Dr. Mullen for your service to our district.

 Joy James Elementary Volunteers
     Volunteers at JJE
Joy James Elementary had their first picture day on Monday September 19th. We had a few volunteers who helped out to make it a good day for our students. Thank you to our volunteers for making it a successful day. They are Shari Moore, Beverly Woodbeck, Karyn Carter and Joe Penninger.
If you would like to become involved in your child's education please consider volunteering. Studies have shown that if you show your children you are interested in their school they are more likely to perform better in school. Please stop by our office and pick up an application and start volunteering today.
